The True Confession

“Repent and believe in the gospel,” says Jesus Christ, as did His disciples. Man is, by nature, a sinner and an apostate. But what does repentance mean? The word repentance means a change of mindset and actions. He who sincerely repents feels shame, sorrow, and disgust for sin, because sin is unclean and dangerous.

But the question arises: To whom should we confess our sins? To friends? To priests? To God? The Bible teaches that we should confess only to God. In Psalm 51:4 we read, “To you alone I have sinned, and done evil in your sight.” Priests are also people with their own sins, and they need to repent just like other people.

God, in 1 John 1:9, assures us that He will forgive us no matter how sinful we are. “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Even though we are sinners by birth, this does not mean it is in our best interest to remain in sin. God has opened our eyes to see that without Christ we are led to eternal destruction. Christ died for our sins, so that we do not have to pay the penalty for sin, but instead, we can live forever with Him in heaven. Will you repent and accept the forgiveness that awaits you today?
